One evening last summer, when I asked my 14 year old son, Ray, for help with dinner, his response shocked me. “What’s a colander? ” he asked.

I could only blame myself. In the family, nobody else’s hands went in the sauce except my own. But that night, as I explained with a touch of panic that a colander is the thing with holes in it, I wondered what else I hadn’t prepared Ray for.

As parents, while we focus on our sons’ confidence and character, we perhaps don’t always consider that we are also raising someone’s future roommates, boyfriends, husbands, or fathers. I wanted to know that I’d raised a boy who would never ask the woman in his life, “What’s for dinner?” So I came up with a plan: I would offer Ray a private home economics course. I was delighted to find that he didn’t say no. For two hours, three days a week, Ray was all mine. One day, as his tomato sauce reduced on the stove, he washed and seasoned a chicken for roasting. Then he rolled out the

piecrust  and filled it with apples, all while listening to my explanation on the importance of

preheating an oven.

I knew that he would rather have been shooting hoops in the driveway than learning to mend socks with his mother—he tried to beg not to have sewing lessons, even though I insisted that one day, someone would find the sight of him fixing his own shirt very attractive— but it couldn’t be denied that he was learning, and more than just housekeeping. “I appreciate what you do as a mom,” he told me one day. Ray now understands the finer points of cooking, and more importantly, he

realizes there’s nothing masculine  about being helpless.

Now, not only can he make his own dinner, but he can make a big meal for his family. That’s

what I call a man. I’m glad I prepared so great a present for my future daughter in-law.

25.Why was the author shocked at her son’s response?

A. Because he was not well behaved.

B. Because he refused to help with dinner.

C. Because he didn’t know the common kitchen tools. D. Because he was very curious about kitchen tools.

26. In the author’s opinion, some parents pay little attention to ____________________.

A. building up children’s confidence B. telling kids what is right and wrong

C. preparing children for their future life D. making children live a hard life

27. We can infer from the text that Ray ____________________.

A. made great progress in cooking B. always thought housework interesting

C. preferred sewing to cooking D. was unwilling to learn cooking at first

28. What would the author like to convey in the text?

A. Useful education for boys B. The importance of housework

C. Boys should be involved in housework. D. Cooking and sewing make boys masculine.

Nothing makes us happier than our families and loved ones, a new study shows, with face-to- face socializing beating reaching out to people online hands down.

The Happiness Barometer, conducted in 16 countries across the globe, was based on the

Coca-Cola Happiness Index, which surveyed between 500 and 1,000 people per country.

Almost two-fifths, or 40 percent, of those surveyed said catching up with their loved ones after work was the happiest time of their day, while more than 20 percent said they were happiest when eating with their families.

By contrast, only 5 percent said they were happiest when connecting with friends online, and even less—2 percent –said the first text message of the day made them joyful.

Families and partners were, by far, the biggest source of the happiness for almost 80 percent of those surveyed, with friends coming up next at 15 percent.

“Despite our celebrity-driven culture, fame is not likely in itself to be a primary source of happiness. Instead, real happiness depends on our connecting with people, especially through love and kindness,” the study said.

Hugs and food also made a lot of people happy, especially in Britain and Russia, where almost a third of people said they are likely to find comfort in a hug or seek it in food.

The countries surveyed were France, Italy, Spain, Britain, Belgium, Bulgaria, Romania, Turkey, Russia, South Africa, China, Philippines, Argentina, Brazil, Mexico and the United States.

29. From the passage we can know that ____________________.

A. about 40% of surveyed people felt the greatest happiness when dining with their families. B. 10% of those surveyed felt happiest when reaching out to people online.

C. fame is unlikely to be a main source of happiness though most people are always seeking it. D. friends are the biggest source of happiness to most people surveyed.

30. What’s the biggest source of happiness to most people according to the passage?

A. Families and partners.  B. Friends. C. Hugs and food. D. Fame.

31. According to the study, how many British and Russians think hugs and food can make them happy?

A. 87 percent. B. 45 percent. C. 33 percent. D. 20 percent.

32. How did the writer develop the passage?

A. By giving statistics. B. By giving explanations. C. By giving definitions. D. By giving examples.

Most of the time, the ground feels solid beneath our feet. That’s comforting. But it’s also misleading because there’s actually a lot going on underground. Masses of land  slip, slide, and bump against each other, slowly changing the shape of continents and oceans over millions and billions of years.

Scientists know that Earth formed about 4.5 billion years ago. They also know that our planet was hot at first. As it cooled, its outermost layer, called the crust, eventually formed moving

plates. Exactly when this shift happened, however, is an open question.

Now, an international group of researchers has an answer. They’ve found new evidence suggesting that Earth’s crust started shifting at least 3.8 billion years ago. The new estimate is 1.3 billion years earlier than previous ones.

Not long before 3.8 billion years ago, lots of small planets were hitting Earth, keeping its crust in a hot, melting state. After the hard crust formed, much of it sank at various times into the planet’s hot insides. There, it melted before returning to the surface.

In some places, however, the crust never sank. One of the oldest such places is in Greenland, in an area called the Isua supracrustal  belt. The rocky crust there is between 3.7 and 3.8 billion

years old. The belt was once part of the seafloor, but now it is exposed to air.

The researchers recently took a close look at the Isua supracrustal belt. They noticed long, parallel cracks in the rock that have been filled in with a type of volcanic rock.

To explain this structure, the scientists propose that tension in the crust caused the seafloor to crack open long ago. Hot, liquid rock ________________________________________________________________________________ deep inside Earth to fill the cracks. Finally, the whole area cooled, forming what we see today.

That explanation, plus chemical clues inside the rock, suggests that the Isua supracrustal belt was once part of plate under the ocean, beginning around 3.8 billion years ago.

“It’s a fantastic case of solving a jigsaw puzzle,” says one of the researchers. He notes that the

puzzle was “a very difficult one because these rocks are all very old and have been badly ruined”.

33. The underlined phrase “oozed from” in Paragraph 7 is closest in meaning to____________________.

A. filled up gradually B. washed away quickly

C. flowed out of slowly D. broke through suddenly

34. What do scientists know about the past of the Isua supracrustal belt?

A. It was once covered by hot, liquid rock.  B. It remained under the deep sea. C. It stayed hot and sinking. D. It kept moving slowly.

35. The text is mainly about____________________.

A. why the Earth cooled B. how the Isua supracrustal belt formed

C. whether the ground beneath our feet is still D. when Earth’s crust began shifting

For a lot of parents, sending their kids off to college is a bittersweet experience. I think a lot of teenagers head to college without any idea about how money works. Don’t let that happen to your college kid. Help them understand these issues before they step into that first class.

●Budget, budget, budget.  ______________________________  So start by making sure you understand budgeting and have begun to use it as part of your financial plan.

●Independence means responsibility. Living away from home means you have to take care of yourself.  ______________________________  Food doesn’t just drop out of the sky, and gas doesn’t magically appear in their car. Independence means responsibility.

●__________  Even if your kid is going to a small community college, they’ll still probably have a few thousand dollars of tuition to pay. If you break it down, one class can cosplayt $1,000 at the very minimum! And that doesn’t even include books.

●Choose a major wisely.  ______________________________This isn’t a must before they step on campus, but simply plant a seed that gets them thinking about what they want to do with their life. You don’t want them graduating with a degree that leaves them unfulfilled or unable to find a job.

●Friends matter.  __________  Who you hang out with definitely influences how you spend money and the decisions you make. Without being overbearing, remind them how important it is to have positive friends who build them up instead of bringing them down.

Remember, as a parent, just be there for support and to strengthen these principles throughout their college experience.

A. Cherish your opportunity.

B. College isn’t cheap.

C. However, not all friends can be really depended on. D. Help your teenager find his or her passion.

E. If you aren’t using a budget, it’ll be difficult to convince your kid to use one.

A Possible Version

Dear Daniel,

How are you doing? I’m glad to have received your email. I will tell you something about the Mid-Autumn Festival.

The Mid-Autumn Festival is an integral part of the Chinese culture. Originating from the worship for the moon, it falls on the 15th day of the 8th lunar month every year, which symbolizes the harvest and the family reunion. It is the time for the family members to enjoy the full moon and eat the tasty mooncakes. In addition to these traditional activities, we have a wider range of choices such as travelling and visiting our relatives or friends.

I hope you can come and celebrate it with me some time in the future. Best wishes!

                                                                  Yours sincerely,

                                                                Li Hua
